Sharpen is a project dedicated to all those who want to have more autonomy in their daily life, by making things themselves. We offer workshops in dozens of manual skills such as renovation, sewing, crafts, zero waste, bicycle, woodworkโ€ฆ

We are here to support you in your projects and show you how to build, upcycle and repair. We believe that with a little help we can all develop our manual skills and become sharper.

Our learning classes

Sharpen offers collective classes every day, taught by an expert, to develop manual skills: woodwork, sewing, knitting, zero waste, electricity, renovation, etc.

The classes are designed to make you autonomous and ready to tackle those everyday tasks that you don’t know how to handle.

By the end of the class, you too will be a proud DIY-er. In the majority of cases, you’ll leave the class with your own creation at the end!

I did the 3-hour plumbing level 1 workshop/course at their Mile End location, it was really great!

If you are in the least bit interested in the basic components and functioning of kitchen/bathroom sink and toilet, I highly recommend this course. While the course won't make you a plumbing expert in 3 hours, I now have a much better understanding of how these things work, and I feel I could probably make some minor repairs myself without too much risk!

We also learnt about some neat (and often cheap) tools especially for unclogging sinks vs toilet; super useful knowledge to have.

Finally, for the Affûtés as a whole, I love it. The teacher was nice (and funny!), the staff was welcoming, and several bathrooms onsite (at Mile End anyways) is a plus.

The courses aren't cheap but you definitely get your money's worth; if you have the means and you are interested in one of their workshops, go for it!

I am already signed up again for the "Repairing small appliances" level 1 course in a few weeks, can't wait!

Second time going to a class, and both times with people that have harder times with special dimensions, so sewing tends to be a bit harder, but it went incredibly well. The teachers take their time and we learn a lot! Wonderful experience

Learned to create an entry shelf with space for papers-it was a blast! Raymond was awesome, he explained the process and what the tools/machines do, and then left us to do it ourselves. He was ready to help if every anyone needed or asked for it. Left feeling satisfied, capable, and wanting to learn more in the future!

Such an amazing place to learn simple techniques for do-it-yourself projects. It’s my second workshop with Les Affutés and it won’t be my last. I’ve already made a sweatshirt and a garden planter and can’t wait to use them both. The staff are friendly, the instructions are clear and you get to create some amazing things in one afternoon

Our mission

The project of Sharpen is born from the fusion of two desires:

  • Fight against the programmed obsolescence of quickly bought, quickly thrown away objects
  • Give or give back to each of us the pride of knowing how to do it by ourselves.

Everything we do is organized around this battle.

And we are proud to have chosen the status that goes with this battle: B Corp. The B Corps are projects, like Sharpen, who think that we can use the Inc status to achieve beautiful things, and put our mission before our profit.
